Why Do We Get Braces on Our Teeth? |
Posted: July 22, 2017 |
Braces come recommended by your orthodontist or dentist to improve your teeth's appearance. Issues such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, an under or over bite, incorrect jaw position, or disorders of the jaw joints are all conditions for which braces are given as a recommendation. Your orthodontist will let you know that, if left untreated, these issues can worsen. They may result in tooth decay, gum disease, headaches, earaches, speech issues, or biting and chewing problems. You should discuss with your orthodontist when the right time is for you to get braces. Braces are not just for children; many teens and adults get them as well. However, it is true that children between the ages of 10 and 14 are most susceptible to have their teeth changed for a healthier adulthood. Some adults even get braces only to brighten their appearance. Your orthodontist may suggest types of braces such as traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign braces. He will know which is best for your teeth and your issues. Always ask as many questions as you have, as they will help you get the best care possible. Traditional metal braces include metal and wire that will contribute to adjusting your teeth. They are bonded to teeth. Ceramic braces are a type of traditional braces, but instead of a noticeable metal wire and bracket system, these wires and brackets are either clear or colored to blend into your teeth. Lingual braces are also called concealed braces. Like traditional braces, they include the use of metal and wire, but they are attached to the back of your teeth to hide them from outward view. These braces, however, are harder to clean. One type of braces that has become a new alternative to traditional braces is known as Invisalign. These are a series of clear aligners that are customized to adjust your teeth. They are ‘invisible,' and can be removed so that you can eat and drink as you please. However, it may be recommended that you only remove it for brushing and flossing your teeth. Each aligner is for two weeks. While this is a more expensive option which needs replacement from time to time, adults still often prefer to use it, to avoid looking like an awkward teen. Braces can be a valuable tool when it comes to achieving great dental hygiene. Talk to your dentist or orthodontic specialist if you may have concerns with your teeth that could be fixed by braces.
